Reviews for Grand Prix 3 in Driving for PC-Personal Computer ( PC ) :

General/Summary:

to sum it up - grand prix 3 is good & bad. after popping it in & gettin through installation I was getting excited. As a huge F1 fan I was hoping for a good quality F1 sim that I haven't been able to find anywhere, & unfortunately this game wasnt it. though it is arguably the best F1 sim to date it lacks in every dept

Gameplay:

ahhh gameplay, the roughest section to cover, so lets start with the controls. the user-interface is pretty good. no real probs there. practice, single race, season mode, qualifying, etc. is all there. some more options would have been nice. anyway, actually driving the cars around on the track can become a total pain the ass if you dont have a racing wheel. do not attempt to play this game with a control pad or a keyboard.

without a wheel it feels as if the car is on 'tracks', like its glued to the racing line. also, it has the feel of assisted steering when turnin into corners. without the auto-forward directioning feature on or whatever you want to call it (when you spin out & the comp automatically points you in the right direction), it is dam near impossible to turn around & get going the right way unless you come to a complete stop on the grass next to the track & gun the throttle to pull off a 180 - very annoying. the throttle & brake response is ok, but it should not be played without foot peddles. it is literally impossible to brake from 175mhp to 60mhp for a corner without locking the brakes up causing your tires to fade fast (& thats tryin to stop in a very reasonable amount of distance)- once again not recommended for a control pad or keyboard.

unfortunately my wheel went haywire right after I bought it so I was unable to fully experience how well it could have played, so I gave up on it. I will surely get myself another one when NR4 comes out. the garage options & features are ok. about as close to realism as it can get. better tweak your car as best as you can or you will be left in the dust. next comes the racing. not to bad, but it suffers. I think the collisions are horrible. it seems as if the AI in this game is no better than its competition on the market. I continuely got spun out by some bastard behind me (& I can outbreak the computer cars with ease so its not like I hold them up). & most times when you hit something other than a car (like the walls or wahetever else), there is no damage taken at all unless your going 100mph. whats
funny though, is when you spin out & hit a curb doing about 40mph your car will flip, the wheels fall off, & the engine blows. ummmm ok. anyway, a major gripe I have here is this game is released in 2000 with drivers, teams, tracks, & stats from 1998. huh?. yes there is a patch to get updated on everything but there is no excuse for this. this may not bother a casual racing fan like most people, but it will surely bother those of us who are F1 fans. there is more but on to graphics.

Graphics:

the good news first. the rain & weather elements are outstanding. I was in total awe heading into my practice session the first race of the season in australia. it was raining pretty heavily with big dark clouds overhead & the track was covered with a nice glare. I thought ok this looks really cool, lets see how fun it is to drive in this stuff. so I stuck on my wets & headed out of pit lane. I was impressed at the very least. so true to life. enough said. the cars look good for the most part, though it seems as if a few parts tend to be glued on to the car. the tracks I thought were nicely done. the in game cockpit view is ok but seems rather dull. supposedly sitting there, watching the steering wheel move by itself. the lcd is good. lots of info on it which is nice. the only major prob I found is this game suffers from horrible slowdown & choppiness. it doesnt matter how big, fast your pc is. it doesnt matter how much detail & trackside objects you turn off, but when there is a load of cars on the screen at one time things get real slow & I mean reaaaal sloooow (especially in the rain). other than that not to bad

Sound:

this was a total disappointment. man oh man. how can you release a game that is missing half the sound it should have? there is no chatter or anything with your pit crew, no spotter or anything to tell you whats happenin on the track or with other cars, laps to go, etc & most importantly there is absolutely no sound from cars other than your own. though I must admit sittin in the cockpit flying around the track hearing your own engine is pretty dam real. I have never heard anythin as close to the real thing before like this. very good, but what happened to the other cars? its good to see them flying up on you (actually it isnt but you know what I mean) when lookin in the rearview but what happens when your concentrating on the corner ahead ....you cant hear them & have no idea where they are. am not sure what they were thinkin. did they just simply forget? oh boy this bothers me.
