Pilot Synopsis

Opening: A man arranges furniture. Cut to two women in bed, sleeping. Back to the man, Tim, he picks out shirts, picking the one that doesn't seem to smell bad. Cut back to the women: Tina finds out that she ovulating and Bette says let's make a baby. Tim is a neighbor of Bette and Tina.

At the coffee shop, Shane, Dana and Alice get their morning coffee. Tina and Bette arrive as Shane leaves. Tina tells the gang that she and Bette are going to see Dr. Foxworthy and that their insemination is today.

At the airport, Tim picks up his girlfriend, Jenny. At Dr. Foxworthy's office, Bette's running late. Tina tries to explain away Bette's tardiness. Bette's the director of the California Arts Center. Bette finally shows up. Tim describes various landmarks to Jenny on their way to their home. The doctor asks Bette and Tina why they want to have a child when their sex life is nonexistent. They respond that it isn't that bad and their doctor doesn't understand lesbian couples.

Tim gets Jenny home and shows her the garage that he's converted to a writing studio for her. Bette and Tina pick up fresh sperm from their donor. As they look around his studio, they can see his silhouette and hear him as he makes his deposit. As Jenny looks around her new studio, she spies Shane and another woman at the pool. They undress, dive in and start having sex.

Bette and Tina are at Tina's obstetrician's office. The doctor takes the container of sperm to have a look at it. She explains that insemination works better if the woman is aroused. Her inference is that Bette should get Tina ready to be inseminated. Though Bette is slightly offended she gives it a try, but stops when the doctor informs her that the sperm has low motility.

At The Planet, Tina joins Alice and Dana. She tells them about Sean's sperm. Alice has had sex with Sean and is surprised that his little swimmers aren't swimmers at all. Dana wonders why Alice can't decide between men and women. Alice tells her she looking for the same quality in both men and women. When Shane arrives, Dana wonders why she has to dress in a way that screams lesbian. Since Dana's in the closet, she doesn't want attention drawn to her, though she hangs out in gay establishments.

At Tim and Jenny's house, Jenny asks if their neighbors are lesbians. When Tim answers affirmatively, Jenny recalls that she saw them having sex in the pool. Tim assures her that Bette and Tina wouldn't do that. The conversation becomes a prelude to them having sex.

Outside her studio, Jenny meets Tina. After offering Jenny some rosemary from her garden, they start talking. Jenny talks about her writing. Tina talks about her and Bette's plans of having a baby. Tina then invites Jenny over to the party that Bette and Tina are throwing.

At the party, Shane shows up. Bette comments that whenever Shane comes into a room, someone leaves crying. As Shane makes her was across the room she's stopped by a woman. The woman wants to know why Shane never called her back but Shane makes excuses and promises that she will. The woman rushes out the door, upset.

Jenny and Tim arrive and are introduced to the gang. Tim recognizes Dana and Dana grabs her mixed doubles partner in tennis. They are both gay and use each other as covers, though they don't admit as much to Tim. Alice takes an interest in Jenny but she and Marina seem to hit it off. Bette's sister, Kit, has been pulled over by the police on her way to a gig. She's driving with an expired license, but because the police officer is a fan of Kit's singing partner he doesn't arrest her, instead driving her to Bette's house.

Later Marina follows Jenny in to the bathroom and they kiss. Though she was into the kiss, she pulls away stunned. She makes a beeline for Tim and insists they leave. When they get home Jenny tells Tim that she felt weird at the party, then gives him a blowjob.

Kit and Bette have an argument in Bette's kitchen. They have a contentious relationship. Just as their argument gets heated, a producer on a soundtrack spies Kit. They leave the party as he discusses using her in a best of women of blues and jazz compilation. After the party's over, Bette and Tina wonder why they couldn't get any takers for sperm donation. Shane talks about the new male, who actually cares about his sperm. He no longer is content to plant his seed anywhere.

The next morning Jenny goes to The Planet. She seems drawn to seek Marina out, but before Marina sees her, Tina asks if she wants to join them. She sits with Shane, Alice, Dana and Tina and discusses her writing. Alice tells Jenny that Marina has a reading group as Marina comes to the table. Everyone but Jenny and Marina leave the table because they see that there's something between the two. Jenny tries to say that she's not gay but becomes flustered. Marina then invites Jenny to the reading group The Planet hosts.

Tina and Bette's next donor will agree have a baby; no strings attached but he will only do it if he has sex with Tina. Jenny decides to go to The Planet for the reading group meeting after all. Tim insisted that Jenny go so that she could socialize. Jenny gets uncomfortable and leaves. The next day, Marina visits Jenny at work and again invites to her to the reading group. Tim and Jenny are invited to a couples' poker night but Jenny decides that she wants to give the reading group another chance.

Tina and Bette have a long-standing disagreement over Bette's reaction to the second donor. When Bette comes home early to spend some time with Tina, Tina is on her way to the gym. When she gets there, her bike coach seems to hit on her. Tina rushes out and back home, and cuddles with a sleeping Bette. The next morning, their fighting continues, this time because Bette isn't a fan of Dr. Foxworthy.

Tim, Jenny and Tim's co-coach and his wife are at a restaurant. Bette, Tina, Shane, Alice, Dana and Marina arrive. Marina gets up to go to the bathroom. When Jenny spies this, she excuses herself to go to the bathroom as well. Jenny tells Marina that she'd like to see her again.

The next morning, when Tim tries to read Jenny's writing, she objects. She later apologizes to Tim and tells him that the move to L.A has affected her, somehow. She acknowledges that he's very supportive. The phone rings and it's Marina. When Jenny hangs up, she tells Tim that Marina has invited them to a dinner party on Saturday night. When Jenny tries to change her mind, Tim encourages her to go.

Again, Bette is late to their appointment to Dr. Foxworthy. When Bette arrives, she tells Tina that she's found the perfect donor. He's an artist and has had a child, so they know he can get someone pregnant. Tina interjects that she's never met him but Bette brushes it off, saying that the man, Marcus, will be at their house the next day to accompany Tina to the cryobank. When Marcus shows up, it turns out that Bette forgot to tell her that Marcus is black. Tina is surprised but tries to pull it off, but doesn't succeed.

When Bette and Tina meet up, later that evening, they have an argument. Bette doesn't understand why it matters that the donor is black. Tina doesn't feel she can be a proper mother to a black child. Tina goes to a talk that what Bette displays as art at the gallery is pornography. Tina sticks up a conversation with the guy sitting next to her. After they talk more, Tina wonders if he will be the sperm donor for her. They both think he's nice and Bette suggests that they try a threesome and he agrees. The man puts on a condom and that's when he finds out what they want. He leaves, incensed that they only want him for his sperm.

Later when the book club is over, Marina shows Jenny her favorite spot to sit and think. They get closer and kiss. Later they have sex at Marina's place. As Marina goes down on Jenny, Jenny starts to cry. When Jenny gets home she cries again, then wipes her tears and lies down next to Tim.

Dana and Alice leave the club, Milk, together. Alice invites Dana to her place assuring her that she doesn't want to sleep with her. They vow never to have sex with each other. At Alice's place, she shows Dana a chart she has drawn. On it she can link one lesbian to another by connecting who each has slept with. Though Dana has only slept with two women, it takes only four to link her to Alice. Shane's name is in the center of the chart. She is connected to everyone.
